Senegal-Morocco: CAF sanctions have hit… and it hurts a lot

The sanctions from the disciplinary committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are now known. The governing body of African football has officially announced its decisions following the incidents that occurred during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a match marked by intense tensions and several behaviors deemed contrary to regulations.

After reviewing the disciplinary reports from the match officials and relevant bodies, CAF has imposed sanctions on several individuals from both the Senegalese and Moroccan sides.

For Senegal, the decisions are particularly severe. National coach Pape Thiaw has been handed a five-match suspension along with a personal fine of $100,000. This punishment follows his inappropriate behavior during the final, as judged by the disciplinary authorities.

On the sporting side, two Senegalese players are also affected. Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr each receive a two-match suspension, ruling them out of upcoming official fixtures in national colors. Additionally, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has been fined a hefty $615,000 due to collective responsibility for the observed incidents.

On the Moroccan side, the sanctions are more moderate but still significant. Achraf Hakimi has received a one-match suspended ban, which will only be enforced in case of a repeat offense. However, midfielder Saibari has been suspended for three matches due to serious infractions as deemed by the disciplinary committee. The Moroccan Football Federation will also have to pay a fine of $315,000.

These disciplinary decisions come after the final won by Senegal and aim, according to CAF, to emphasize the importance of respecting rules, sporting ethics, and the spirit of the game during African competitions. They also reflect the continental body’s determination to firmly sanction any misconduct that could tarnish the image of African football.
