CAN 2025: Tough blow for the 18 Senegalese supporters held in Morocco

Since January 18, following the Africa Cup of Nations final, 18 Senegalese supporters accused of “hooliganism” have been in provisional detention, still waiting to learn their legal fate.

“Due to the lawyers’ strike in Morocco, the hearing scheduled at the Rabat court has been postponed to Thursday, February 5, 2026,” said one of the lawyers defending the concerned Senegalese supporters. This is the second postponement in this case, which continues to raise serious concerns.

The hearing, initially set for January 22, had already been postponed once to January 29. This new delay extends the provisional detention of the Senegalese supporters, who have been incarcerated since January 18 due to incidents that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations final.

According to sources close to the case, most of the detainees are members of the 12th Gaindé national and international, a well-known supporter group that regularly travels with the Senegalese team. The accused come from Senegal as well as several Western countries where the Senegalese diaspora is strongly established. A Franco-Algerian national is also among those currently detained in this case.

In total, 19 people were arrested and placed in custody, suspected of “hooliganism” related to the incidents during the CAN 2025 final, held on Sunday, January 18, in Rabat between Morocco and Senegal. The match was won by the Lions of the Teranga (1-0) after extra time.
