As the host of the 2025 AFCON, Morocco’s image has taken a hit following the final, which was marred by refereeing controversies and the towel incident that made waves internationally. These events have sparked numerous criticisms, especially in Spain, but what are the actual consequences for Morocco with FIFA?
According to information reported by The Athletic, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has decided to take no action against Morocco. He believes that the chaos during the final, won by Senegal, and the towel incident do not impact the African nation’s chances for the 2030 World Cup. On the contrary, Infantino considers that the organization of the 2025 AFCON was excellent and that Morocco has been a remarkable host, providing infrastructure and hospitality worthy of the event.

This decision also seems to be an indirect response to Spain, which had launched a campaign to push FIFA to remove Morocco from the co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup. Several Spanish journalists and influencers harshly criticized the towel incident, as well as certain refereeing decisions deemed favorable to Morocco throughout the tournament.
It’s important to note that, in some Spanish circles, Morocco’s growing ambition raises concerns. The kingdom reportedly tried to secure the hosting of the 2030 World Cup final, which has created tensions with Spain. A few days after the AFCON final, Rafael Louzan, president of the Spanish Football Federation, insisted that the 2030 World Cup final will take place in Spain.

In response, several Moroccan media outlets shared images of the problems faced by some Spanish stadiums, like the water leak at Camp Nou during the match against Oviedo, to support Morocco’s capability to host the final. These publications were seen as a direct counter-argument to the Spanish statement, highlighting the preparation and quality of Moroccan infrastructure.
For now, FIFA has not yet commented on Rafael Louzan’s statement, and all indications suggest that the 2030 World Cup final will likely be held in Spain. Nevertheless, the experience from the 2025 AFCON has showcased Morocco’s expertise in organizing major events, solidifying its reputation on the international stage, despite occasional controversies.
