AFCON 2025: After the mismanagement, bad news hits CAF

The curtain may temporarily fall on one of the major events in African women’s football, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026. Initially scheduled to take place in Morocco, the competition is now set to be officially postponed.

According to information shared by journalist Romain Molina, the Confederation of African Football could announce in the coming hours the decision to delay the event, although the specific reasons for this postponement have not yet been officially communicated. This prospect is already raising many questions within the continental football community.

This postponement comes at a particularly sensitive time for the Confederation of African Football, which has already faced criticism for its handling of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Several observers pointed out shortcomings related to infrastructure and the overall organization of the competition, fueling a climate of discontent in continental football.

Morocco’s withdrawal from hosting is seen by some analysts as an indirect consequence of these tensions, worsened by the defeat in the final against the Senegal national football team and the supposed influence of certain figures in African football, particularly Fouzi Lekjaa within the continental bodies.

Officially, the postponement is justified by constraints related to the international calendar and the desire to ensure optimal conditions for the players, especially regarding sports infrastructure. However, many observers believe this decision also reflects political issues and ongoing tensions surrounding the governance of African football, where power dynamics continue to spark debates.

For the participating teams, this delay creates a period of uncertainty. Players and coaching staff will need to adjust their physical and tactical preparations while waiting for the tournament’s new schedule. For the CAF, this situation represents a new image challenge after the criticisms already directed at the organization of the 2025 AFCON and the logistical difficulties faced during previous major African competitions.
