Klopp, it’s confirmed for the German Federation!

The German Football Association has officially taken a significant step in its search for a new head coach. In a statement released this Saturday, the DFB confirmed that it has reached a preliminary agreement with Jürgen Klopp to take over the Nationalmannschaft. The former Liverpool manager is now close to succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, although several formalities still need to be sorted out before his appointment is officially announced.

According to the German Federation, a decisive meeting took place on Friday in New York between DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke, and Jürgen Klopp. The discussions, described as “constructive” by the association, allowed the parties to agree on the main elements of a future contract. This progress marks a major milestone in a process closely followed by German fans since the Mannschaft’s elimination in the 2026 World Cup.

However, the DFB clarified that the process is not yet fully complete. Negotiations will continue next week to finalize the last details of the contract. One of the main hurdles remains the approval from the Red Bull group, Klopp’s current employer. Since January 1, 2025, the German coach has held the position of global football director for the Austrian brand, overseeing the various clubs owned by the group. His departure will need to be validated by Red Bull before any official signing.

Even if a consensus is reached among all parties, Klopp’s appointment still needs to be approved by the governing bodies of the German Federation. The DFB reminded that any potential contract must receive validation from the supervisory board as well as the general assembly. These administrative steps are the final hurdles before a possible official announcement, which could happen in the coming days if discussions go as planned.

Choosing Jürgen Klopp is no surprise. Since Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation following Germany’s elimination in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup against Paraguay after a penalty shootout, his name has been frequently mentioned. The German Federation wanted to entrust the rebuilding of the team to an experienced coach capable of restoring a strong identity to a squad that has been struggling for several years.

Klopp’s reputation has been built over many successful seasons. After doing remarkable work at Mainz, he propelled Borussia Dortmund to the top of German football with several national titles and a Champions League final. His time at Liverpool firmly established him among the best coaches of his generation. In nine seasons with the Reds, he won the Champions League in 2019 and delivered the club its first Premier League title in thirty years in 2020, becoming a true legend at Anfield.

Klopp’s arrival would mark a new beginning for a German team struggling to regain its prestige. World champions for the fourth time in 2014 in Brazil, the Nationalmannschaft has since faced disappointment after disappointment, with early exits in the group stages of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, followed by a premature exit in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. German officials now hope that Jürgen Klopp’s experience, charisma, and methods will help to sustainably revive the Mannschaft and restore it among the great powers of world football.
