Senegal – Saudi Arabia: A Final Full-Scale Test for the Lions Before Official Matches

Senegal will play its second friendly match this Tuesday evening against Saudi Arabia at Toyota Field in Texas. After the defeat against the United States (3-2) on May 31, the Teranga Lions want to end this gathering on a positive note and continue their upward trajectory ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

Despite the setback against the Americans, the coaching staff noted several encouraging lessons. Pape Thiaw’s men displayed solid collective control, especially in ball possession with 53%. This performance hinted at progress in their gameplay, even though offensive efficiency and defensive solidity still need improvement.

Facing the Lions, Saudi Arabia arrives with similar ambitions. The Green Falcons, led by Greek coach Georgios Donis, are also in the midst of a rebuild and aim to create a competitive team for upcoming international competitions. The Saudis will rely on several experienced players, including their captain Salem Al-Dawsari, who has scored 27 goals for the national team. The winger will be supported in attack by Saleh Al-Shehri and Firas Al-Buraikan, two players capable of making a difference in the final third.

Fresh off a convincing victory against Puerto Rico (3-0), the Saudi eleven poses a serious challenge for the Senegalese. This match will serve as a true test to measure the progress made since the start of the training camp.

For Senegal, this final friendly before entering the qualifiers against France, scheduled for June 16, will mainly focus on fine-tuning. The coach’s goal is to solidify the players’ connections and establish a clear hierarchy before the official matches.

In goal, Édouard Mendy is expected to retain his starting position. In central defense, the pairing of Moussa Niakhaté and Mamadou Sarr is likely to start the match. On the flanks, El Hadji Malick Diouf should occupy the left side while Krépin Diatta is anticipated on the right.

In midfield, Pape Thiaw is expected to rely on a complementary trio of Pape Gueye, Habib Diarra, and Lamine Camara. These three players will be tasked with ensuring the team’s balance while pushing forward.

In attack, Senegal is set to field a particularly promising offensive unit. Captain and technical leader of the Lions, Sadio Mané is expected to drive the offensive play. Nicolas Jackson is anticipated at the tip of the attack while Iliman Ndiaye should occupy the right flank.

With a team close to its starting eleven, Senegal hopes to deliver a convincing performance and get back to winning ways before facing official challenges with confidence and calm.
