On Monday, the San Antonio Spurs announced the signing of Mamadi Diakit\u00e9 on a two-way contract. Although he is unlikely to play a major role for the team, the 2.06m inside forward will bolster the Texans’ starting line-up behind Victor Wembanyama following injuries to Zach Collins, Charles Bediako and Charles Bassey.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The San Antonio Spurs have lost several inside players to injury since the start of the NBA season. They have therefore recruited Mamadi Diakit\u00e9, a new replacement for Victor Wembanyama<\/a> at pivot, to bolster their starting line-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spurs announced on Monday that Diakit\u00e9 had signed a two-way contract<\/a> – a type of contract that allows players to play for both an NBA team and his G League team. The 2.06m inside player played 19 games in the development league this season with the Westchester Knicks, averaging 8.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and one block per game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The native of Conakry, Guinea, has played in 49 NBA games in his career, with the Bucks, Thunder and Cavaliers. He was crowned NBA champion with Milwaukee in 2021, appearing briefly in a few playoff games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 26, Mamadi Diakit\u00e9 does not have a great deal of experience in the league and is unlikely to play a significant role for the Spurs. However, he could get some game time to make up for the absence of San Antonio’s replacement pivot Zach Collins, who is expected to miss two to four weeks with a sprained right ankle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the start of the season, the franchise also lost its pivot Charles Bassey, who is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. More recently, they had to do without Charles Bediako, who is suffering from a torn medial collateral ligament.
