Yao Kouassi Gervinho, also known as “Gervinho”, a member of the Ivorian national team (86 caps) and 2015 African champion with the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire, has expressed his ardent desire to see Côte d’Ivoire win the trophy at this 34th edition of the TotalEnergies CAF CAN.

Gervinho’s ambitions were highlighted on Thursday, January 11, 2024, when he signed a partnership agreement with TotalEnergies Marketing Côte d’Ivoire.

This Saturday, January 13, 2024, the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire launch their wild ride for the conquest of their 3rd star. They face Guinea-Bissau at 8pm at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpé.

Gervais Yao Kouassi, also known as Gervinho, is a key figure in the Ivorian national team with 86 caps to his name, and dreams of seeing the CAN trophy remain on the banks of the lagoon. In any case, the 2015 African champion firmly believes in it.

“It’s my wish that the cup stays in Côte d’Ivoire. It’s my most fervent wish for this year. If God gives us the grace to start the year with this trophy, it will be wonderful. We’ll all be proud.

It will increase the number of stars we have,” he added. “With all the efforts made by the Ivorian government to ensure that we have the best CAN ever, it would be wonderful if we won this trophy. As African champion (2015), I’d like my younger brothers to also add this trophy to their palmares.”

“Let go and have fun”

If the footballing gods are on their side, the Ivorian team will claim the grail on the evening of the competition. But before that, there’s the opening match on Saturday. And Jean-Louis Gasset’s men will need to negotiate this bend in the road sparingly if they are to achieve a positive result.

The “Jaguar” has a few words of advice for this opening fixture. “For the opening match, I’d already like to encourage my young brothers. There’s no pressure on them. Let them enjoy themselves. It’s a historic moment. And this kind of moment rarely happens in the life of a footballer.

When God gives you the privilege of living this moment, you have to let go and enjoy yourself. You want to see a great Côte d’Ivoire team. We want to see players who are less stressed, relaxed and enjoying themselves.

They’re lucky enough to be taking part in an African Cup of Nations at home, and I don’t think that happens to everyone,” says Gervinho. Even off the pitch, he remains fully behind his younger brothers. “We spent several years enjoying ourselves, but we didn’t get the chance. I wish them the best of luck. We’re with them. They have our blessing and that of the whole of Côte d’Ivoire. We’re waiting for the Cup,” he concludes.

The Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire have two titles to their name. Hosting the TotalEnergies CAF CAN for the second time 40 years after its first experience, Côte d’Ivoire is aiming for its third star on home soil. Lodged in Pool A, the Ivorian pachyderms will play Guinea-Bissau on January 13, before Nigeria on January 18 and Equatorial Guinea to close out the group phase on January 22.
