Turkish media TV 100 has unveiled its Top 50 list of the greatest African footballers of all time. The ranking has sparked controversy due to notable omissions and surprising placements.

Who is the greatest African footballer of all time? It’s a question that often resurfaces in debates. Typically, Samuel Eto’o’s name is at the forefront. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for Turkish media TV 100, which opted to place George Weah at the top, considering his Ballon d’Or France Football win in 1995. However, among the most notable absentees in this ranking are African football legends such as Salif Keita, Laurent Pokou, and Joseph Antoine Bell.

These players have left an indelible mark on the continent’s football history with their talent and achievements, and they arguably deserved a spot on this list. Other choices have also stirred controversy. One might particularly question Samuel Eto’o’s second-place ranking, as he has always considered himself the greatest African player of all time. George Weah, the only African to have won the Ballon d’Or, tops the list, but his lead over Eto’o seems debatable.

Ivorian and African football icon Didier Drogba completes the podium. Yaya Touré, a four-time winner of the African Player of the Year award, comes in 5th, while Sadio Mané, one of the best players in the world currently, sits at 10th place. Mohamed Salah, another star of African football, settles for 8th place.

Here is the TV 100 ranking of the 50 greatest African footballers in history.

Turkish media TV 100 has unveiled its Top 50 list of the greatest African footballers of all time.
