The 18 Senegalese supporters in Morocco, finally a glimmer of hope

The 18 Senegalese supporters arrested in Morocco took a new step in their detention this Thursday.

They were taken into custody on January 18 by the Rabat police during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which Senegal won against Morocco (1-0 after extra time). For 24 days, their legal situation remained unclear. However, things changed when they appeared before the Rabat court.

The 18 supporters finally heard

After a first postponement of a week, the defendants were heard by the Moroccan justice system. According to Wiwsport, several representatives from Senegalese associations, who came specifically from the country, were present to offer moral support.

Notably, the defense lawyers were absent during this hearing. This absence was part of a strike initiated to protest what they consider an unfair trial. Their plea is now expected on February 19, the date set by the court.

Hooliganism suspicions at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium

The 18 detainees are suspected of “hooliganism” after clashes occurred with stadium officials in the 90+4 minute, following a penalty awarded to Morocco during the final held at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Their supporters claim it was a case of self-defense.

On the eve of the trial, lawyer Patrick Kabou denounced obstacles to his mission: “I do not have the procedure, I cannot communicate with my 18 clients, I am regularly prevented from entering the court,” he stated in a press release, even claiming that his clients “still do not know what they are being accused of.”
