Regragui slams the door: two reasons to doubt the FRMF’s denial

For the past 24 hours, the future of Walid Regragui at the helm of the Moroccan national team has been shrouded in uncertainty. While the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) issued a statement denying any resignation from their coach, several reliable sources are urging caution.

Just hours after Foot Mercato, RMC Sport reported that Walid Regragui has indeed expressed his intention to leave his position to the FRMF. This isn’t a formal resignation yet, but a clear desire communicated to his superiors, who have not provided an official response so far.

Internal discussions are ongoing within the Federation. The issue is divisive: some officials want to persuade Regragui to continue until the 2026 World Cup, while others are already anticipating his departure.

A denial that feels like a delaying tactic

On Friday, the FRMF was adamant: “Walid Regragui has not submitted any resignation.” This statement seems mainly aimed at quelling rumors while a final decision is made, just months before the 2026 World Cup.

This communication style brings to mind a previous incident: in May 2022, the Federation denied the dismissal of Vahid Halilhodzic… only to thank him three months later and appoint… Walid Regragui. This history fuels skepticism towards official statements today.

Saudi Arabia lurking

Another important factor: Walid Regragui is attracting real interest from Saudi Arabia, where several clubs in the Saudi Pro League are eyeing him. Exhausted by the intense pressure of the national team and affected by the loss in the AFCON final against Senegal, the coach might be tempted to return to club management.

At this stage, the FRMF’s denial is not enough to clear up all the questions.
