After a convincing victory against Tanzania in the opening, Morocco had high aspirations to follow up with another victory. However, the DRC thwarted their plans, and forced the Atlas Lions to concede a draw on Sunday (1-1) during Afcon 2023.

Morocco took the lead in the 6th minute thanks to a quick goal from Achraf Hakimi. However, despite this early lead, the Atlas Lions failed to take cover throughout the match. The outcome of the match could have been different if Cédric Bakambu had not found the post on a penalty. But, the DRC persisted and equalized in the 76th minute thanks to Silas Katompa Mvumpa. This equalization not only cooled Moroccan enthusiasm but also jeopardized their leading position.

While Morocco could have validated its ticket to the round of 16 in the event of a victory, the DRC, in second position, changed the situation by equalizing and even showing signs of being able to win. The clash intensified further with an altercation between Chancel Mbemba and Walid Regragui, the Morocco coach, at the end of the match.
