The president of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), Walid Sadi, submitted a complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to request a new confrontation between Algeria and Burkina Faso. The manager points out several refereeing errors during this meeting which ended in a 2-2 draw.

In an intense match between Algeria and Burkina Faso on Saturday afternoon at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, the Fennecs managed to snatch a 2-2 draw in the final moments of this match counting for the second day of Group D of Afcon 2023. Convinced that the Algerian team was disadvantaged by refereeing errors, the FAF officially filed a complaint with CAF.

“The FAF accompanied this official complaint with photos and videos, following obvious penalty situations. The VAR did not flinch,” we can read. In any case, Algerian supporters are wild and have been making themselves heard, particularly on social networks, since the final whistle of this match. The contentious situations were carefully documented and transmitted to the general secretary of CAF, Véron Monsengo-Omba. “All the contentious situations were transmitted to the secretary general of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Véron Monsengo-Omba, who was surprised,” added the leader of the FAF (Algerian Football Federation).

The black anger of Djamel Belmadi after Algeria-Burkina Faso

Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi did not hold back his criticism of the refereeing after the draw (2-2) against Burkina Faso at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké. His main point of contention is a penalty not called in favor of his team.

Algeria, after managing to snatch a draw in the final moments of the match, could have claimed a more favorable result. Djamel Belmadi maintains that South African referee Abongile Tom overlooked a hand from Issa Kaboré, a decision which could have changed the course of the match.

“Apparently there is a real hand with a real penalty. There is a hand from Kaboré which is not a real penalty even if I am told that there is a hand on the ball catch apparently. You have to see that. There was a real penalty against Angola (editor’s note, during the first match), we raise our hands, we say it was verified and it’s a real penalty. We will look at that and I would like to point out because it made the difference today,” said Djamel Belmadi in comments relayed by ouestfootafrique.

We are impatiently awaiting the response from the Confederation of African Football to the complaint from the Algerian Football Federation. What is certain is that it is unlikely that the body will agree to replay a Afcon 2023 match because of a clear error by the referee, who was not helped by the Var. The Fennecs, who now have 2 points after two draws, still have the opportunity to qualify for the round of 16 if they win against Mauritania on the last day of the group stage. The Mourabitunes have just recorded their second defeat in the competition.
