AFCON 2023 : Joy in Morocco after Algeria’s elimination

The Algerian team’s early exit from the first round of AFCON 2023 was greeted with enthusiasm by some in Morocco.

The Fennecs’ failure triggered an explosion of joy and celebrations among Moroccan fans. Hundreds of them spontaneously took to the streets of various Moroccan towns to show their delight at the misfortune of their rival Algerian team.

Videos that have gone viral on social networks show Moroccan fans celebrating after the Fennecs’ defeat by Mauritania. Algeria’s elimination sparked lively celebrations among Moroccans, marked by mockery and jokes directed at the Algerian team.

The videos, which were widely shared, show groups of Moroccan fans in the streets following the Algeria-Mauritania match. At the end of the match, their contentment at the elimination of the Fennecs was demonstrated by parades of cars honking their horns, as well as singing and dancing.

Algeria, the end of an era

The Algerian team suffered an early exit from the African Cup of Nations, finishing bottom of Group D. Following this setback, coach Djamel Belmadi announced his resignation as national team coach. Meanwhile, several key players such as Riyad Mahrez, Aissa Mandi and Bentaleb are seriously considering calling time on their international careers.

This edition of the competition has been a source of great disappointment for a team that had raised the hopes of millions of Algerian fans around the world. The defeat to Mauritania was not only a blow to Algerian fans, but also prompted calls for immediate reforms within the national team.
