The penultimate match of the round of 16 in the AFCON 2023 between Mali and Burkina Faso turned in favor of the Eagles. More solid in the first 50 minutes, Eric Chelle’s men secured a 2-1 victory, advancing to the quarterfinals alongside Ivory Coast.

The quarterfinal matchups for the CAN 2023 are now complete. In the clash between Burkina Faso’s Stallions and Mali’s Eagles at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo this Monday, the Malians proved to be more resilient. Quickly ahead on the scoreboard after Edmond Tapsoba’s own goal (3rd minute), Mali avoided the mistakes made by Senegal on Monday by maintaining ball possession. More technically precise, they dominated the first half but failed to score before halftime.

In the second half, Mali continued in the same vein, scoring the decisive goal in the 47th minute. In a well-executed move by Hamari Traore, Lassine Sinayoko slipped the ball between Hervé Koffi’s legs, bringing the score to 2-0. Stunned, the Burkinabé attempted to react, and in the 55th minute, Mohamed Konate won a penalty, converted once again by Bertrand Traoré.

In the last 30 minutes, Burkina Faso pushed to equalize but without success. In the end, Mali emerged victorious, setting up a quarterfinal clash against Ivory Coast in Bouaké. However, it marks the end of AFCON 2023 for the Burkinabé.
