Egypt’s draw against Ghana (2-2) on Thursday was marked by the early exit of Mohamed Salah due to an injury to the back of his left thigh. This situation has left uncertainty surrounding the Egyptian superstar’s future participation in Afcon 2023.
Initially, it was announced that Mohamed Salah would be out of the Pharaons’ next two matches. However, the feared scenario materialized this Sunday. The Egyptian captain left his team’s gathering to return to Liverpool.
“The decision to leave the tournament was difficult, but my priority is my health. I will work hard to get back on my feet and come back stronger. Thanks everyone for the support. I promise to come back stronger. Your support means the world to me. Let’s stay strong together,” said Mohamed Salah.
Salah’s departure to Liverpool is panicking Egyptian fans who are already questioning his availability for the next stages of Afcon 2023. This Sunday, Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool coach, also confirmed the departure of the Pharaoh from Afcon 2023 : “Mohamed is an essential player for us, and his health is our priority. We are working with the Egyptian medical team to ensure appropriate follow-up of his injury. We spoke with Mohamed, and he is determined to return to his best level. We fully support his decision to prioritize his recovery,” said the German technician.
Some sources suggest a possible return of Salah for a possible semi-final. In any case, it would add a dose of optimism, but the final decision will depend on the evolution of the injury and medical considerations.
