Shortly after Ivory Coast clinched the Africa Cup of Nations title, an unexpected development shook the Equatorial Guinea team, leading to the expulsion of two players by their federation.

On February 11th, ecstasy engulfed Ivory Coast following their triumph over Nigeria in the final, securing their third championship title despite a rocky start and a miraculous qualification for the knockout stages.

However, Equatorial Guinea, which had shown promise during the group stages, faced disappointments, notably with an early exit after a loss to Guinea (0-1) in the subsequent round, despite an outstanding performance in the group stage that saw them finish at the top of their group, ahead of the two finalists. Emilio Nsue stood out by becoming the tournament’s top scorer with five goals.

Nevertheless, an incident in Abidjan marred this narrative. The Equatorial Guinea Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) announced the suspensions of Emilio Nsue and Iban Edu, the latter involved in an incident that led to police intervention after accusing hotel staff of theft.

These incidents resulted in their exclusion from the national team, with Nsue being penalized for several serious acts of indiscipline, while Edu was at the center of an unpleasant incident in the Ivorian capital.
