In a thrilling final hosted by Ivory Coast, the home team secured its third African Nations Cup by defeating Nigeria 2-1, thereby matching the trophy count of its opponent, which was aiming for a fourth win. Below is a list of the top five countries with the most titles following the conclusion of the 34th edition yesterday.

Egypt 1st Cameroon 2nd …, the nations with the most CAN titles
  1. Egypt
Dominating the top spot, the Pharaohs of Egypt have garnered seven trophies. Their victory journey began with the inaugural tournament in 1957, culminating in their latest win in 2010—marking the end of a streak of three consecutive titles. Between 2006 and 2010, they achieved an unbeaten run of 21 matches in the tournament.
  2. Cameroon
The Indomitable Lions have claimed the competition five times, the most recent being in 2017 when they overcame Egypt in the final. The iconic Samuel Eto’o led his team to back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2002, though they were defeated by Egypt in the 2008 final.
  3. Ghana
The Black Stars have secured the African championship four times, with their last victory dating back to 1982. Formerly known as the Gold Coast, the nation has not tasted African gold since the tournament expanded from an eight-team event and has failed to clinch a win in the last three editions.
  4. Nigeria, Ivory Coast
Both finalists of the 34th edition have each won the tournament three times. The Super Eagles missed the chance to catch up with their neighbors, Ghana, falling short and allowing the Elephants to equal their tally. Nigeria has faced defeat in five finals, mirroring the record of its rival, Ghana.
  5. Algeria, DR Congo
Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have each won the tournament twice. The Fennecs’ last triumph was in 2019, while the Leopards last claimed victory in 1974.

Zambia, Sudan, Tunisia, and Senegal have each lifted the trophy once.
