Emilio Nsue, the Equatorial Guinea national team captain, and his teammate Ivan Salvador have been indefinitely suspended by the national football federation.
The top scorer of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the Miedz Legnica forward faced sanctions due to “unpleasant incidents” occurring before, during, and after the tournament in Ivory Coast, as stated by the federation in a press release.
It was reported that the players were involved in an incident necessitating intervention by the Ivorian police, which subsequently delayed the team’s return to Equatorial Guinea, according to the football federation. This incident has been cited as causing harm to the national team’s and Equatorial Guinea’s reputation and image.
These suspensions are part of broader structural changes within the Equatorial Guinea national team.
During the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations, the Nzalang Nacional made a significant impact with their resounding 4-0 victory over the tournament winners, Ivory Coast, but their journey ended in the round of 16 following a 0-1 loss to Guinea.
Emilio Nsue stood out by scoring the tournament’s only hat-trick and finishing as the top scorer of the 34th AFCON.
