Nigeria are on their way to Côte d’Ivoire, where the 2023 African Cup of Nations will take place from 13 January to 11 February. Already without Wilfried Ndidi and Victor Boniface, the Super Eagles have received some very good news three days before the tournament kicks off.
Nigeria are desperate to repeat the feats of 2013 and 1994 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles, led by coach José Peseiro and star Victor Osimhen, have openly stated their objective of winning the 2023 African Cup of Nations for Nigeria. Drawn in Group A alongside hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau, Nigeria should qualify for the last 16 if all goes well.
Two years ago in Cameroon, the Super Eagles put in a solid performance in the group phase before breaking their jaws against Msakni’s Tunisia in the Round of 16. That elimination remains a bitter pill that Victor Osimhen’s team-mates want to swallow. Absent from Cameroon due to injury, the 2023 African Golden Ball winner will be present at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire to help his country go all the way.
Nigeria’s very good news ahead of the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
After the withdrawals of Wilfried Ndidi and Victor Boniface, the Super Eagles can now put a smile on their faces. Kelechi Iheanacho, who had been announced as doubtful for the competition, has finally recovered and will indeed be in Côte d’Ivoire for CAN 2023, according to Super Eagles coach José Peseiro.
In an interview with journalists in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, late on Monday, he said that Kelechi Iheanacho is now fully fit to play for the team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
“Kelechi will be with us in Côte d’Ivoire. He has completed his treatment at Leicester City,” he said.
But according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Foxes striker had been sidelined by injury and did not take part in the team’s week-long training sessions in Abu Dhabi.
Kelechi Iheanacho has stayed at his club to make a full recovery ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off on Saturday in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. But the former Manchester City striker is now expected in Didier Drogba’s homeland to join the Super Eagles, José Peseiro has confirmed.
The Super Eagles, three-time African champions, are on their way to Côte d’Ivoire this Wednesday to take part in the 34th CAN finals. The day before, they took part in a special dinner organised by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Lagos.
