The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly reacted to the appeal lodged by Guinea Conakry, which called for Tanzania’s disqualification from the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN). According to reports, the plaintiffs were unsuccessful.
The CAF disciplinary committee met last Friday to examine the appeal lodged by Guinea after their decisive meeting with Tanzania in the CAN Morocco 2025 qualifiers. Guinea had contested the result of the match, citing an alleged administrative error on Tanzania’s part.
Tanzania won the match 1-0, eliminating Guinea from the competition. The Guinean Football Federation quickly referred the matter to CAF, claiming that Tanzania had breached certain administrative rules.
After a careful examination of the facts, the disciplinary committee decided to fine Tanzania $50,000 for the administrative error. However, this decision did not call into question the sporting result, and Tanzania’s qualification for the CAN 2025 finals was confirmed.
Although this decision is definitive in sporting terms, it is likely to provoke debate among observers and fans alike. Guinea, which had been hoping for a reversal of the result, sees its dream of taking part in the CAN 2025 receding into the distance.
CAF has announced that the official decision will be published by Wednesday at the latest, so that all parties concerned can read it and examine the details. For the time being, CAF has made no official comment on the complaint from Guinea, who are resigned to the idea of not taking part in the competition following their defeat by Tanzania. We’ll be following this case closely.
