The Confederation of African Football (CAF) was asked this Saturday about the possibility of Algeria rejoining the CAF Executive Committee (Comex).
During the 2024 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations trophy ceremony in Hurghada, Egypt, Augustin Senghor, president of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) and a member of the CAF Comex, commented on Algeria’s chances of reclaiming a seat in the governing body.
He expressed his support for Algeria’s return, emphasizing the importance of having major football nations represented in decision-making bodies, although he did not provide a definitive stance on the matter. “Ideally, all major football nations should be present in decision-making bodies… Algeria, being one of the continent’s football giants, has the resources and expertise to bring real value to African football,” he stated, adding that no one within CAF could deny Algeria’s legitimacy to sit on the Executive Committee.
Motsepe remains cautious
When asked about this, CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised Algeria but refrained from committing to a specific position. “Algeria is a great football nation, proud of its history, and one of the best teams in Africa. CAF supports all African teams, and I am confident that Algeria will soon regain its former glory,” he said, without offering a direct answer.
Algeria lost its Comex seat in 2017 when Mohamed Raouraoua, former president of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), was defeated by Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa. Last year, Raouraoua’s successor, Djahid Zefizef, also failed in his bid and stepped down shortly afterward. Now, Walid Sadi, the current president of the FAF, seems determined to restore Algeria’s prestige, according to local media. The final verdict remains to be seen.
