FIFA has announced the dates for the next three editions of the Arab Cup, with the last one taking place in 2021.

During the 74th FIFA Congress this Wednesday in Bangkok, the governing body of football announced that the upcoming editions of the Arab Cup will be held in 2025, 2029, and 2033 in Qatar. The Arabian Peninsula country had requested to host the three campaigns after successfully hosting the last one in December 2021, which served as a test run a year before organizing the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

11 African teams in contention?

Participation from countries, including several from Africa (potentially Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Tunisia, Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan), will be subject to the invitation of the host country and likely a preliminary round, as in 2021. Similar to previous editions, the next three will take place outside FIFA dates, and teams will predominantly consist of local players and those playing in the Gulf.

Algeria, the defending champion

The last edition saw Algeria triumph over Tunisia in the final (2-0) with goals from Amir Sayoud and Yacine Brahimi in extra time. In the semi-finals, the Greens defeated Qatar (1-2). Djamel Benlamri opened the scoring in the 59th minute before Youcef Belaïli secured the win in the 90th+17 minute following Muntari’s equalizer also in injury time (90th+7).

Madjid Bougherra and his team thus joined Morocco, crowned in 2012, Egypt (1993), and Tunisia, the winner of the inaugural edition in 1963, in the tournament’s history. At that time, Tunisia prevailed over Syria (1-0) in Lebanon. It’s worth noting that the tournament has been officially recognized by FIFA only since 2021.
