Africa will have to wait a bit longer to see one of its players win a second Ballon d’Or, the highest individual honor in football. For the 2024 edition, Brazilian star Vinicius Júnior is considered a frontrunner after playing a key role in Real Madrid’s historic treble in the 2023-2024 season.
The only African Ballon d’Or winner to date is George Weah, who claimed the prestigious award in 1995 while playing for PSG and AC Milan. Since then, several African players have come close, but none have succeeded.
Sadio Mané
In 2022, Senegalese international Sadio Mané finished second behind Karim Benzema, despite having an outstanding season with Liverpool. Some felt Benzema lacked the consistency that Mané displayed throughout the season.
Didier Drogba
Ivorian striker Didier Drogba ranked 4th in the 2007 Ballon d’Or standings, during a period when he was one of Europe’s top scorers.
Samuel Eto’o
Samuel Eto’o, now president of FECAFOOT, finished 5th in 2009, trailing stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Many believe he should have won the award in 2010 after playing a pivotal role in Inter Milan’s Champions League triumph.
Mohamed Salah
Egyptian international Mohamed Salah placed 5th in 2022, despite winning the Champions League with Liverpool and maintaining exceptional consistency throughout the season.
