Surprise for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting! The striker has not been called up to play for Cameroon at CAN 2023.
Cameroon national team coach Rigobert Song has dropped Bayern Munich striker Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, who made his debut for the Indomitable Lions at the 2010 World Cup but paid the price for missing Cameroon’s last three outings.
“Choupo Moting is a very good player. But my staff and I want the continuity of recent times.
He’s an important player, but we had to make a choice in line with what we’ve been doing for some time now,” Song told a press conference as he named his 27-man squad for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Côte d’Ivoire (January 13-February 11), unveiled on Thursday.
The coach prefers to make way for young Cameroonian players Leonel Ateba and Wilfried Nathan Douala. Choupo-Moting seems to be taking the news in stride. To date, there has been no official reaction from the player regarding this non-convocation.
However, it seems that the striker has found other ways to enjoy his time, according to AfriqueSports.
“On his Instagram account, Choupo-Moting shared a photo of himself and his girlfriend sharing a moment of complicity over a delicious dish of bean fritters.
A gourmet break that could well be his way of digesting his absence from the CAN 2023.
The image shows the couple in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying a moment of happiness and conviviality together.
The two lovebirds seem happy and carefree, demonstrating that Choupo-Moting chooses to focus on the pleasures of life despite his sporting disappointment”, wrote our confrères.
The Indomitable Lions are in Group C, which includes Senegal, Guinea and Gambia. After their Group C opener against Guinea, Cameroon will face defending champions Senegal and then Gambia.
