Samuel Eto’o, a legend of Cameroonian soccer and current president of Fecafoot, has (again) taken a swipe at the Cameroonian Football Association.
Joseph Antoine Bell, the iconic former goalkeeper of the Indomitable Lions (70 caps), now aged 69, had no hesitation in lashing out at the leader following the publication of the book “L’Arnaque”, written by journalist Jean-Bruno Tagne and denouncing Eto’o’s authoritarian drift.
“What Jean-Bruno Tagne says from the inside can be seen from the outside… Eto’o doesn’t need a plot to harm him, he does that very well on his own.
You can’t straighten out a hunchback! He’s running like a train that’s going to end up derailed, with all the sad consequences that will have for Cameroonian soccer”, declared the former Olympique de Marseille goalkeeper in the 1980s in an interview for the daily Le Monde.
These comments may come as a surprise when we recall the embrace between the two men last September, when the national team had just secured its ticket to the CAN following its 3-0 win over Burundi.
Cameroon soccer in danger?
Joseph Antoine Bell’s criticism underlines a deep concern about the direction and leadership of Cameroon soccer under Eto’o’s presidency.
He insinuates that the former striker’s actions and management style could prove to be a form of self-sabotage, damaging not only his personal reputation but above all the future of soccer in the country.
Bell, with his wealth of experience and respected status in the world of Cameroonian soccer, seems concerned about the management of Eto’o, suspected since the leak of an audio of having helped rig league matches and under investigation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for “alleged inappropriate behavior”.
