An Arsenal fan in Uganda, named John Ssenyonga, died during celebrations for the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, in a Premier League match. His death was announced on December 5, 2024 by BBC News.
According to reports, the incident took place at the end of the match. The manager of a restaurant, unhappy with the noise of the jubilant fans, reportedly asked the security guard to intervene. However, the fans ignored the warning and continued to celebrate loudly.
Witnesses said that after the owner cut off the electricity in the restaurant, the fans’ anger escalated, prompting the janitor to open fire. John Ssenyonga, aged 30, was killed instantly, while another fan, Lawrence Mugejera, was injured and taken to hospital.
The janitor and restaurant manager fled after the incident. Police recovered a firearm from the scene and launched a manhunt for those responsible. Regional police spokesman Twaha Kasirye condemned the act of violence and urged anyone with information to contact the authorities, while calling on fans to tone down their enthusiasm.
