Sébastien Desabre, the coach of the DR Congo national team, faces a setback ahead of the upcoming fixtures in June, with Cédric Bakambu’s availability also in doubt.
There’s bad news for Desabre and the Congolese squad. The Congolese Football Association (Fécofa), on its official X account (formerly Twitter), announced on Sunday the withdrawal of winger Silas Katompa for the next two matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. “For personal reasons, Congolese international Silas Katompa will not be available for the two matches in June 2024,” a statement read. This comes as a second blow after Bakambu’s injury.
Despite being a substitute numerous times this season in the German league, the 25-year-old player scored the final goal for Stuttgart in the 83rd minute, his seventh of the season in 30 matches, securing a 4-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
His absence is a significant setback, despite his role as a backup during the 2023 African Cup of Nations. Moreover, Cédric Bakambu is likely to miss out due to a proximal tendon injury in his right anterior muscle, which has kept him out since April 28th, when they faced Sevilla (1-1).

Currently third in Group B after a 2-0 win against Mauritania followed by a 1-0 defeat against Sudan in November, DR Congo will travel to Diamniadio to face the group leaders, Senegal (with 4 points), on June 6th, before hosting Togo three days later (June 9th) at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa.
