“At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, Emiliano Nsue emerged as the top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals, much to the surprise of many observers.

The captain of Nzalang Nacional had a splendid tournament in Abidjan and witnessed a significant surge in his popularity. Following the 2023 AFCON, the player decided to retire from international duty following issues with the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation.

He and another player from the national team, Iban Edu, were accused of ‘serious misconduct’ and were subsequently excluded from the national squad.

It was after this exclusion that the 34-year-old player decided to call time on his international career.

But this decision seemingly won’t hold for long. Waters seem to have passed under the bridge, and Emiliano Nsue has already announced his return to the national team. The player has had discussions with the Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Nguema Obiang, and has agreed to return with his other teammates who had also been shown the door.

“My brothers and sisters. To the people of Equatorial Guinea. After very difficult months for me and my teammates, as captain, I believe it’s time to express my feelings sincerely, honestly, and openly, as I have always done since the beginning of my career with Nzalang Nacional until today. After all that has happened post-AFCON and what has been publicly seen, His Excellency Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue and I had a second private meeting, in which, as an Elder Brother, he promised me many changes in the internal aspects of the national team that are already underway and conveyed his desire to bring improvements in many aspects both to the national team and to sports in Equatorial Guinea,” the Equatoguinean forward posted on Instagram on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

“As with any major change, it takes time, but the process has already begun, and I, along with the rest of my teammates, have confidence and hope that the changes will continue and we will begin to see improvements in the needs of the national team. Personally, my desire has never been to resign from the national team, and I have never had doubts about it; I love my national team, my country, and my teammates,” he continued.

“The captains and I, after evaluating all that has happened and after the private interview with His Excellency the Vice President, as well as all the support received from the people of Equatorial Guinea, cannot give up and discard such a beautiful project because of a series of individuals who have done so much harm to the national team and the name of our country.

It would not be fair to you, nor to us who have put in so much effort and dedication. That is why I want to make it known that I (Emilio Nsue), along with the captains and the rest of the teammates, will return to the national team at the next call-up in June so that all the people of Equatorial Guinea can continue to dream, laugh, dance, suffer, celebrate, and strive to achieve the goals,” he officially declared.”
