Kaba Diawara, at the helm of the Guinea national team, is determined to qualify his team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. With only one previous participation in 1968 as an invited team, Guinea aims to earn their spot on the field this time.

On May 9, 2024, the Guinean team will face an Asian side that finished fourth in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, at Clairefontaine. A victory in this crucial match would open the doors to the Olympics for Guinea.

For Diawara, this sporting encounter is fraught with emotions and responsibilities. “It’s a mix of feelings. I am tense, honored, and proud. In 1968, Guinea was invited, but this time, we must earn our place,” he expressed, aware of the historical significance of this qualification. Faced with the tactical challenges posed by the Asian opponent, known for their discipline and endurance, Diawara is preparing his players for an intense confrontation. “Asian teams never give up. We need to be quick, physical, and remain focused. This playoff is like an NBA final played over seven games. We cannot afford to make mistakes,” he declared, emphasizing the importance of concentration and tactics.

Diawara also insists on the need for his team to be realistic and efficient. Mistakes from the past, notably during the 2023 AFCON where the team dominated but failed to score, must be avoided. “We need to be effective and realistic from the first opportunity. We must stay focused and avoid errors that could cost us dearly,” he stressed.

If Guinea crosses this playoff hurdle, they will face even greater challenges at the Olympics, potentially in a tough group with France, the United States, and New Zealand. However, Diawara remains confident and motivated. “Just like at the AFCON, we are in a tough group, but we thrive in this context. Our goal is to bring rigor and seriousness to the team,” he affirmed.

Kaba Diawara and his team are thus ready to face the challenge, aware of the importance of each match and determined to make history for Guinean football by qualifying for the Olympics on the most prestigious sports stage.
