Hervé Renard, the former coach of the Ivory Coast national team, clearly favors the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) over the European Championship (Euro).
The French coach has a strong affinity for African football, where he has achieved his greatest successes. He has won the prestigious continental trophy, the Africa Cup of Nations, twice during his stints with Zambia and Ivory Coast.
Having announced his departure from coaching the French women’s national team after the 2024 Olympics, Renard is strongly linked with a return to coaching in Africa. It seems to be the working environment that suits him best, having previously had a short stint at LOSC.
“The CAN is more interesting than the Euro. The Euro is nothing less than the Africa Cup of Nations. At the Euro, from the beginning, you can name at least four or five teams that could win the trophy. But in Africa, all teams are capable of winning it. You can also be surprised by the results. Big nations can be defeated by smaller ones. For me, the CAN brings a lot of excitement and is so interesting with many clashes. Many people love it,” Renard stated.
Renard’s endorsement of the CAN over the Euro is likely to further enhance his popularity on the continent.
