Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana will be part of the Indomitable Lions squad for the CAN 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire.
André Onana has been selected by Cameroon for the African Cup of Nations, which kicks off next month, leaving Manchester United without their No.1 goalkeeper.
Onana has played every competitive match since joining United. The Red Devils had hoped that the former Ajax goalkeeper would be available for the CAN, from January 12 to February 13, after announcing his retirement from international soccer last year.
But the 27-year-old then made a U-turn, representing Cameroon in September amid his current difficulties at United.
Boss Erik ten Hag – who managed him at Ajax – has kept faith, not even giving his replacement Altay Bayindir a single minute of soccer so far this season.
But Turkish international Bayindir is set to make his debut next month, starting with the Red Devils’ home match against Tottenham on Sunday January 14.
While it is understood that Manchester United have faith in Bayindir to fill Onana’s absence, a new goalkeeper could be recruited in January at short notice.
The Red Devils have been reluctant to use veteran Tom Heaton as No.2 since his return to the club in 2021.
