A few hours after several articles were published suggesting a postponement of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) to 2026, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reacted firmly.
In a statement, the governing body of African football clarified the situation regarding the upcoming CAN, scheduled to be held in Morocco.
It affirmed that no decision had been made yet. “Announcements regarding a possible postponement of the 2025 CAN are false. The CAF Executive Committee will convene to deliberate and make a decision on the dates for the 2025 CAN.
The CAF will then issue an official statement on the matter,” the statement read. This denial comes as many media outlets have misconstrued the remarks of CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba, who only suggested that a postponement was strongly under consideration during an interview with the BBC, without officially confirming anything.
Les annonces concernant un éventuel report de la CAN 2025 sont fausses.

Does this denial change anything? The CAF aims to maintain its authority and cannot tolerate its flagship competition’s postponement being announced in the media before an official declaration.
However, it appears increasingly likely that the postponement is inevitable, and its official announcement could be just a matter of time, especially considering that FIFA has reserved the summer of 2025 for its revamped Club World Cup.
