Algerian international Riyad Mahrez is facing heavy criticism in Saudi Arabia for missing the start of his club, Al-Ahly’s, preparations for the new 2025-2026 season.
Still on vacation with friends and family, the captain of the “Fennecs” has been lambasted on social media for his lack of commitment to the club.
The behavior of the former Manchester City player is starting to irritate the loyal fans of Jeddah’s flagship club, who haven’t hesitated to publicly denigrate him. Upon hearing these criticisms, Riyad Mahrez took to Instagram to post a photo showing him working with his personal fitness trainer by Lake Como in Italy.
There’s work to be done for the “Fennecs” winger to shed the extra weight he accumulated during his extended vacation.
Riyad Mahrez isn’t the only African star facing criticism in Saudi Arabia. Senegalese player Sadio Mané is also reportedly having a tough time with his club Al-Nassr, who are looking to offload him during this summer transfer window.
Here are Riyad Mahrez’s stats with Al-Ahly:
In 33 matches played for the Saudi powerhouse across all competitions last season, the Algerian international scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists.
It’s a fairly decent record, although the former Premier League MVP struggled in some crucial matches.
