Al Ahli Jeddah is seeking to mend fences with its Algerian star Riyad Mahrez by offering him a special gift, following a disagreement with German coach Matthias Jaissle caused by Mahrez’s tardiness to training.
Media had previously reported a rift between Mahrez and the 33-year-old Jaissle, but Mahrez simply admitted his lateness without entering into open conflict with the coach.
The future of Matthias Jaissle with Al Ahli remains uncertain after failing to clinch the Saudi Pro League title this season, settling for third place with 61 points, a whopping 29 points behind leaders and champions Al Hilal.
Al Ahli Jeddah aims to retain Riyad Mahrez and avoid losing his services, especially given the apparent discomfort of the player under Jaissle’s guidance. The Saudi club is thus exploring other options to keep Mahrez happy and performing.
One proposed solution is the recruitment of Algerian coach Djamel Belmadi, who has been free since his dismissal from the Algerian national team in January 2024. Belmadi and Mahrez share many positive memories from their time with the national team, which could foster a harmonious working atmosphere at Al Ahli.
However, official negotiations between Al Ahli and Djamel Belmadi have not yet commenced. The Saudi club is also in contact with other potential coaches, including Portuguese manager José Mourinho, who has been free since his departure from AS Roma.
