Algeria: Another obstacle to Mahrez’s return?

Riyad Mahrez has been absent from the national team since the African Cup of Nations (CAN), and there’s speculation about his return for the next Algeria squad assembly.

Having underperformed at the CAN last January, Mahrez was not selected by Algeria’s new coach, Vladimir Petkovic, for the March fixtures. This was at Mahrez’s own request, as explained by the coach. Since then, the 33-year-old winger appears to have moved past his disappointing CAN performance, playing a key role in his Saudi club’s resurgence. With five decisive contributions since the last international break (2 goals, 3 assists), the former Manchester City player has helped Al-Ahli secure third place in the Saudi Pro League, trailing behind champions Al-Hilal and runners-up Al-Nassr.

However, a potential hurdle could impede his return to the national team for the World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Guinea and Uganda in June. According to La Gazette du Fennec, the former Le Havre player hasn’t been in contact with Petkovic since their sole phone conversation in March.

Is there just one condition for his return?

While optimistic about a comeback, the Algerian media believes that the captain’s return hinges on a candid dialogue between the involved parties. Especially since Petkovic is keen on instigating a minor revolution and changing the team dynamics, which doesn’t necessarily guarantee Mahrez a central role, something he was accustomed to under former coach Djamel Belmadi.

Nevertheless, this dialogue could be a golden opportunity for Mahrez to demonstrate his mental readiness to reassume leadership of the team. As Petkovic prepares for his upcoming European tour, might he consider a detour to the Middle East to meet with the left-footed player, or at least reestablish contact? The next few weeks could be crucial.
