In Algeria, Riyad Mahrez’s name has been making headlines for a few hours now.
The new coach of the Fennecs has announced his final squad for the upcoming two matches of the Algerian national team.
The Fennecs will face Guinea and Uganda in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The Algerian national team will first play Guinea on June 6, 2024, in Algiers at Bakari Stadium before heading to Kampala to face Uganda on June 10, 2024.
For these two matches, Vladimir Petkovic has announced his list of selected players, including Riyad Mahrez, the undisputed star of the Algerian team.
Although he was initially included in the coach’s preliminary list, the former Manchester City player was eventually left out of the final selection, along with Youcef Belaïli. Some have called for Mahrez to retire from international football following this exclusion.
According to former Algerian international Karim Ghazi, this might be the best time for Mahrez to retire from international duty. Mahrez has faced disappointment with the national team, failing to advance past the group stage in the last two African Cup of Nations tournaments.
As the team’s technical leader, he couldn’t help Algeria progress further in either the 2021 tournament in Cameroon or the 2023 edition in Côte d’Ivoire.
