A new Franco-Algerian contender is shaking up the plans of the new Algerian national team coach, Vladimir Petkovic.
Indeed, SCO Angers midfielder Himad Abdelli is having an exceptional season. Shining in his club, he’s drawing attention and raising questions about his notable absence from Petkovic’s team.
Abdelli is having his best season since arriving in Ligue 1. His physical prowess and game intelligence make him a major asset for Angers. He’s consistently delivering strong performances and significantly contributing to the club’s likely promotion to Ligue 1. His talent doesn’t go unnoticed. Courtship from several clubs is underway, with OGC Nice showing strong interest. A transfer to the Azurean club seems imminent.
Despite his club performances, Abdelli struggles to make his mark in the national team. Left out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by Djamel Belmadi, he hasn’t had his chance under the new coach, Vladimir Petkovic, either. Some observers argue he hasn’t been given enough opportunities, partly due to an injury in his last match with Algeria.
Despite his national team absence, Abdelli is only 24 years old, and his future looks promising. His current excellent form and transfer to a Ligue 1 club could finally help him establish himself in the national team.
His fine season has been recognized by his peers. He was named in the Ligue 2 Best XI for the 2023/2024 season by the UNFP. Whether he’ll be called up for the national team’s next camp in June remains to be seen. The answer will come in the next few days.
