The president of the Algerian Football Federation, Walid Sadi, has reached out to a new French-Algerian player to strengthen the Algerian national team in the coming years.
Enzo Sternal, a 16-year-old talent from Olympique de Marseille, has made a name for himself in the club’s youth categories. However, negotiations to extend his contract, which expires in 2025, have hit a deadlock. Sternal has turned down the offer of a one-year extension, not convinced by the club’s project. This season, he has scored 15 goals and provided 13 assists in 21 matches with the under-19 team.
Although he hasn’t yet played for Marseille’s first team, Sternal is confident in his abilities and is considering playing abroad, particularly in England and Germany. He hopes that his participation in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship with the French team will attract the attention of clubs capable of nurturing his talent.
The Algerian Football Federation is also interested in Sternal. Of Algerian descent through his mother, from the Mila province, he is not opposed to playing for Algeria. A previous incident with the French Football Federation, where he was sanctioned for displaying a jersey with the inscription “Allah is Great,” could influence his decision.
Though the sanction was eventually overturned, it might lead him to choose the Algerian team to avoid potential pressures in France. Especially considering that the president of the FAF, Walid Sadi, has recently made contact with the French-Algerian prodigy.
