As the Algerian team prepares for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in Morocco, head coach Vladimir Petkovic has identified positions in urgent need of reinforcements.
After four matches, he has noted some concerning weaknesses, particularly in the goalkeeper position.
Recent performances, especially those of Anthony Mandrea, have highlighted costly deficiencies. To address this, Petkovic is considering calling up an experienced goalkeeper. Names being circulated include Alexis Guendouz from CR Belouizdad and Alexandre Oukidja from Metz. Guendouz would bring fresh energy, while Oukidja, if he comes out of international retirement, would provide a short to medium-term solution.
The central defense is also a weak point. Frequent errors, particularly during the home defeat against Guinea, have underscored the need for reinforcements. The return of Ramy Bensebaini, currently in rehabilitation with Borussia Dortmund, is anticipated to stabilize the defense. Petkovic is also considering new recruits like Samir Chergui from Racing Club de Paris and Chouib Keddad from CR Belouizdad.
In attack, recent inefficiency and the decline in form of Baghdad Bounedjah, along with the prolonged absence of Islam Slimani, are causes for concern. Petkovic is therefore exploring options such as Amine Chiakha from FC Copenhagen and Rayan Cherki from Olympique Lyonnais to revitalize the offensive sector.
