During a recent interview with Dzair Tube, former MC Alger player Ibrahim Chaouch expressed concerns about the performances of Algeria’s national team goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea.
Chaouch compared the current goalkeepers’ contributions to that of Raïs M’Bolhi, highlighting M’Bolhi’s significant impact where he was seen as representing 60% of the team, whereas Chaouch feels Mandrea doesn’t even reach 50%.
Chaouch pointed out Mandrea’s tendency to concede goals even in victories, citing the example of the match against Cape Verde, where Algeria won 5-1 but Mandrea still let in a long-distance goal. Chaouch believes this vulnerability underscores the need to explore other goalkeeper options.
He advocated for giving Alexis Guendouz and Mustapha Zeghba starting roles in upcoming matches, arguing that these two goalkeepers should be groomed for official competitions, emphasizing Mandrea’s current status as the team’s weak link.
Finally, Chaouch stressed the crucial importance of having a top-notch goalkeeper to qualify for the World Cup or win the Africa Cup of Nations. He mentioned elite goalkeepers like M’Bolhi and Yassine Bounou, who have been pivotal for their respective national teams, asserting that Algeria must strengthen this key position to aim for significant achievements.
