An important player of the Algerian national team is struggling at his club after failing to establish himself and secure a starting position.
According to several Spanish newspapers, Algerian international Aïssa Mandi could be the first player to leave Villarreal this summer.
These same sources report that the central defense is one of the priority areas to strengthen for the club, and with players like Mandi who have failed to impress this season, his departure seems imminent. Indeed, coach Marcelino García Toral is said to have already thanked Mandi at the end of the season, not as a recognition for his performances, but rather to indicate that his time at the club is over.
During this season, Aïssa Mandi has been starting 18 times for Villarreal, but his performances evidently haven’t convinced the technical staff. The Spanish press indicates that the former Betis player, along with his defensive teammate Jorge Cuenca, have uncertain futures at the club. However, while Cuenca’s fate remains to be decided, Mandi’s seems already sealed: he would be put up for sale during the summer transfer window.
Despite having one year left on his contract, the club and its supporters are not satisfied with his performances, making his sale beneficial for all parties. At 32 years old, Mandi is considered too old for a contract renewal, and Villarreal prefers to sell him now to avoid losing him for free next summer. Even if he had performed well, the club would likely have considered selling him to generate revenue. Given that he has not established himself as an undisputed starter, his departure becomes a priority for the club, which is looking to rejuvenate and strengthen its defensive lineup.
