Aissa Mandi, the 32-year-old Algerian international defender, is facing a major issue with his club in Europe, specifically in Spain.

He’s currently experiencing a tough period at Villarreal, where his previous season was marked by performances below his usual standards. He was rarely a starter in his 22 appearances, mostly coming off the bench. This situation has affected his form, which has also drawn criticism during his sporadic appearances for the Algerian national team.

Under coach Vladimir Petković, the Algerian national team has struggled defensively, conceding eight goals in four matches, increasing media and public pressure on Aissa Mandi due to his declining performances.

Recent reports from Spain suggest that Villarreal is considering parting ways with Mandi this summer for several reasons, including his drop in form and having only one year left on his contract. The club would prefer to sell him now rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next year, despite him joining Villarreal on a free transfer in 2021 from Real Betis.

Villarreal’s management has also opted to extend the contract of 38-year-old former Spanish international Raúl Albiol, who is expected to start alongside Eric Bailly next season, further complicating Mandi’s future at the club.
