Another obstacle to Riyad Mahrez’s return to the Algerian team?

Riyad Mahrez has been absent from the Algerian national team since the Africa Cup of Nations, leading to speculation about his return for the upcoming team gathering.

After a disappointing performance in the tournament last January, he was not called up by the new coach, Vladimir Petkovic, in March at his own request. Since then, the 33-year-old winger seems to have overcome this setback by excelling with his club in Saudi Arabia. Involved in five goals since the last break (2 goals, 3 assists), he has played a significant role in Al-Ahli’s climb to third place in the Saudi Pro League, behind Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr.

However, an obstacle appears to be hindering his return to the national team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Guinea and Uganda in June. According to La Gazette du Fennec, Mahrez has not been in contact with Petkovic since their sole phone conversation in March.

For his return, one condition seems necessary: open dialogue between the two parties. Petkovic is indeed planning changes in the team, which does not guarantee Mahrez his former leading role. These discussions could provide Mahrez with an opportunity to demonstrate his determination to reclaim his leadership position in the squad.

As Petkovic prepares for a European tour, he might find the time to meet with Mahrez in the Middle East, or at least, reestablish contact. The upcoming weeks are crucial for this situation.
