Mohamed El Amine Amoura, player for US Saint-Gilloise and the Algerian national team, received chilling news.
This Sunday marked the end of the playoffs in Belgium, thus concluding the 2023/2024 sports season. Despite a regular season where Union Saint-Gilloise, led by Mohamed Amoura, dominated the standings, a rough start in the final phase cost Alexander Blessin’s team dearly, relegating them to second place in the final standings.
Starting in the match against Genk for this season’s last game, Mohamed Amoura delivered a remarkable performance for Union SG, playing a key role in his team’s victory (2-0). However, this closing victory wasn’t enough to secure the double for Amoura’s club this season, following their Belgian Cup win on May 9th.
With 49 points, Union Saint-Gilloise had to settle for second place, just one point behind Club Brugge, who clinched the championship with 50 points. A draw against Cercle Bruges was decisive, giving Club Brugge the crucial point that tipped the scale in their favor. Nonetheless, as runners-up, Union SG will have the opportunity to participate in the UEFA Champions League qualification rounds next season.
Mohamed Amoura has been a revelation throughout the season in Belgium, emerging as the Algerian sensation of the year and attracting the attention of major European clubs. With exceptional performances, especially mid-season, the Jijel native scored 22 goals and provided 7 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. In this last match, Amoura left the field to a standing ovation from the Brussels crowd, a gesture that seemed like farewells for the player. Will he stay at the club next season? That seems unlikely…
