The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has made a significant decision by appointing a team of Algerian referees to officiate a crucial match in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This team is led by Mustapha Ghorbal, with Mokrane Gourari and Akram Zerhouni as assistant referees, and Youcef Gamouh as the fourth official.
The match in question will pit the Cameroonian national team against the Cape Verdean national team and will take place in Yaoundé on June 8th. This will mark the third matchday of the World Cup qualifiers.
Both teams enter this encounter with mixed results from the previous matchdays. Cameroon secured a convincing victory (3-0) against the Mauritius team but was then held to a draw (1-1) against Libya. On the other hand, Cape Verde managed a goalless draw (0-0) against Angola at home and then clinched an away victory (2-0) against Eswatini.
Currently, three teams share the top spot in the standings with 4 points each: Cameroon, Cape Verde, and Libya. Mauritius sits in fifth place with one point, while Eswatini is at the bottom of the table with no points.
This match between Cameroon and Cape Verde holds great significance for both teams in their quest for qualification for the World Cup. The appointment of an Algerian refereeing team, led by Mustapha Ghorbal, demonstrates FIFA’s confidence in the country’s referees’ abilities to officiate high-level international matches.
