Following the incident involving Morocco’s football club, Berkane, and its controversial jersey upon arrival in Algeria to face USM Alger in the CAF Confederation Cup, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reacted firmly and decisively.
CAF swiftly took action by meeting with officials from the Moroccan club as well as a representative from Algerian authorities to discuss the situation. Following these discussions, CAF took a stand by addressing Algeria’s concerns, stating that it refused to allow the match to proceed with the Moroccan team wearing the contentious jersey.
This decision by CAF demonstrates its commitment to upholding international football rules and standards, particularly regarding the use of political symbols on team attire. By categorically denying the Moroccan team the opportunity to play in their controversial jersey, CAF sends a strong message about the importance of keeping sports separate from political controversies and ensuring the integrity and fairness of competitions.
As part of this decision, the Moroccan team is now required to bring an alternative jersey for the match or find a way to conceal the controversial map during the game. This measure aims to ensure that the match proceeds in accordance with football rules and values while preserving the sporting atmosphere and avoiding disruptions due to political issues.
