Ismaël Bennacer, the Algerian midfielder for AC Milan, finds himself at a crossroads in his career. On one hand, his undeniable talent and potential as a club star are recognized by all.
On the other hand, recurring injuries and uncertainties about his future within the Milan team darken the picture.
The Algerian international unintentionally influenced AC Milan’s summer transfer market. According to the Italian press, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, unofficial advisor to the club, reportedly wished to bring in the young German star Hssan Ouedraogo from Schalke 04.
Ouedraogo, sought after by several clubs, however, turned down Milan’s offer as he did not want to settle for a substitute role behind Bennacer. This rejection prompted Milan to look at other options.
Bennacer missed a significant part of the 2023-2024 season due to injuries, first a serious knee injury in May 2023, followed by a setback during the 2024 AFCON. Limited to just 25 appearances across all competitions, he only showcased his full potential in the last four Serie A matches.
Despite his contract running until 2027, Bennacer’s future at Milan is far from certain. Some within the club’s management are considering selling him this summer to generate funds for other signings. His release clause of €50 million could be lowered to €35 million to facilitate his departure.
However, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Swedish legend and unofficial club advisor, could play a role in keeping Bennacer at the club. The two players share a close relationship, and Ibrahimovic is said to have advocated for giving the Algerian another chance.
The arrival of the new coach, Paulo Fonseca, could also influence Bennacer’s future. The Portuguese is known for his playing style that highlights technical and creative midfielders, a profile that Bennacer fits perfectly when at his best.
Ismaël Bennacer’s future at AC Milan is uncertain. His talent is undeniable, but injuries and financial considerations complicate matters. The influence of Ibrahimovic and Fonseca’s arrival could play a crucial role in determining his fate. The upcoming season will be decisive in whether he can reclaim his star status and establish himself as a key figure in Milan’s new era.
