The Algerian international recently discussed his choice to adopt his father’s surname, Guitoun, when he joined the Algerian national team in May 2023. Born in Maubeuge, France, to an Algerian father, Guitoun explained that it was a matter of “pride” and “honour” to carry his Algerian parent’s name.
According to Algerian law, to obtain nationality, it’s necessary to bear the name of the parent from the country. Guitoun proudly embraced his Algerian heritage, stating, “It’s my father who is Algerian, and I took his name with pride.” This name change wasn’t merely an administrative formality for Guitoun; it was a significant symbolic gesture reflecting his deep connection to his Algerian roots.
It’s worth noting that the Algerian international made his debut for the national team in May 2023. He played in two matches during his first call-up: a 2-1 victory against Uganda in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers and a 1-1 draw against Tunisia in a friendly. Despite Guitoun’s impressive performances last season with FC Metz (34 matches, 1 goal, and 3 assists), the club unfortunately faced relegation to Ligue 2. French media reports suggest that RC Lens is interested in the player for the upcoming season. His profile reportedly appeals to Pierre Dréossi, former FC Metz executive and current general manager of RC Lens.
