Rabah Madjer, a legend of Algerian football, recently spoke out in defense of his son Lotfi Madjer after he chose to represent Qatar in the U23 Asian Cup tournament. In his statements, Rabah Madjer also brought up a scandal from his time as the coach of the Algerian national team.
His support for his son Lotfi was accompanied by an implicit criticism of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF). Madjer denounced what he sees as negligence on the part of the FAF towards his son, highlighting that he had recommended Lotfi’s selection for the Algerian national team in the past, to no avail.
However, Rabah Madjer did not just limit himself to defending his son. He also shed light on a past scandal during his tenure as the national team coach. He also questioned the circumstances of his dismissal as coach, alluding to a preparatory match against Portugal as insufficient justification for his departure. The former FC Porto player emphasized that history will one day reveal the truth about his tenure as coach and the events surrounding his dismissal.
Despite his statements, Madjer stated that he was not in a hurry to reveal all the truths at the moment, suggesting that a day will come when the light will be shed on past events. His words raise questions about transparency and football management in Algeria, highlighting the challenges Algerian football has faced in recent years.
“When people say that Madjer failed with the national team in 2018, they must have valid arguments to say so. How can one dismiss a coach after a preparatory match against Portugal? To those who say that Rabah Madjer did not succeed with the national team, I will just say this. History will reveal its truths one day. I am not in a hurry to make these revelations at the moment. But one day you will know the truth,” said the Algerian football legend.
